Manic disorder

Where they diverge

Traditional concepts do not map one-to-one onto modern diagnoses. Read the divergence note first.

The traditional concept is broader. The WHO standard traditional-medicine terminology describes manic psychosis as covering not only elevated mood but psychotic states and behavioural disorganisation under one name, whereas ICD-11 splits that territory between schizophrenia-spectrum and mood disorders. ICD-11 6A60 also routes substance-induced mania and mania secondary to other medical conditions to separate codes; the traditional name carries no such exclusion rule and can absorb delirium, intoxication and agitation in dementia. In the other direction, the traditional name omits what ICD-11 uses to decide care: a minimum one-week duration for a manic episode, and the mania/hypomania threshold together with functional impairment that separates bipolar type I from type II. Without episode, duration, hypomania, depressive pole or course, patients in remission or with hypomania only are not captured by this name. Note — Confidence in this correspondence is low: no peer-reviewed Korean medicine literature addressing this disease name itself was found; the evidence rests on one introductory sentence in a bipolar disorder case report.

Mapping confidence: Analogical onlybasis: literatureauto-generated · not individually reviewed
  • Research confidence: low. The full assessment, in Korean, is in docs/PATTERN_RESEARCH_KCD_DISEASES.md.
  • The modern correspondences come from literature research, not from an official KCD or KTKP mapping, so the highest mapping confidence is not assigned.
  • Full evidence and citations are in docs/PATTERN_RESEARCH_KCD_DISEASES.md.
  • KCD does not carry the Donguibogam volume, so it is left blank here. It needs checking against the original text.
  • The ICD-11 TM1 code is shown alongside because the two classifications carry the exact same official English name. It is not a mapping we created (§11-R2).
  • 5 question(s) the research could not settle — see the research document.
