Traditional concepts do not map one-to-one onto modern diagnoses. Read the divergence note first.

The traditional concept is broader: it names a symptom and its mechanism — a stiff neck that cannot be turned — rather than a tissue lesion, so it unites presentations that the modern classification places in different chapters. A Korean claims-data study (PMID 27069494) reports this code being used alongside myalgia, muscle strain, cervicalgia and cervicobrachial syndrome codes. Conversely it decomposes neither aetiology, tissue nor severity. It cannot distinguish what ICD-11 separates — traumatic injury, degenerative disc disease, nerve-root compression, myelopathy — nor, more importantly, the serious causes of a stiff neck: meningitis, spinal infection, fracture, tumour, and vertebral artery dissection.
